From 1951 to 1963, I was a principal dancer with the National Ballet of Canada. I then studied the Martha Graham modern dance technique in NYC and from that, created my own method of bodywork exercise, Somatic Stretch®: the Jarvis Technique, also known as Inner Body Fitness.
The technique is non-strenuous yet energizing and prepares the body for any activity, ranging from yoga and Pilates to sports to everyday use. The ultimate goal of the technique is to develop proper body mechanics and postural alignment so the body works at its best both physically and physiologically.
Its unique approach to working in conjunction with the stretch reflex for maximum effectiveness and safety sets Somatic Stretch apart from yoga and Pilates and other bodywork exercise methods.
Since 1980, Somatic Stretch classes have been ongoing in my midtown studio in Toronto, Canada. In the spring of 2013, my daughter and Co-Director, Meredith Sands Keator, and I started an online training program, which now has trainees is Canada, the US, England and Australia.
